Vacationing amidst the Chaos

My sister and I are going to Thailand today and I feel a little bit "bu hao yi shi," a little bit guilty. We're not flying to Myanmar via Bangkok on a relief effort mission. We're not heading south to be rescue workers in earthquake-devasted Sichuan province. We're going to Thailand on a vacation. The trip was planned months before any of these natural disasters hit, but even so, our situation juxtaposed with the millions and millions of people suffering makes me realize how fortunate we are, how clueless and safe we have it in our untouched bubble.

It also makes me realize that I am becoming more and more desensitzed to the tragedies we read about everyday in the news, whether it's war-torn Iraq or cyclone ravaged Myanmar. It's almost as if all the suffering and pain in the world has been running like a faucet that only spurts out boiling hot water, or freezing cold water: you leave your hand under there for more than 2 minutes, and you can no longer feel how hot or how cold it is. It's too much, and you become numb. That's how I am now. Numb.

You read about it. You see pictures, hear about stories. The brain processes the info, you react appropriately, but it's as if you can no longer grasp the meaning, the feeling of it...unless it happens to you, or someone close to you.

Who or what do you blame for this desensitization? Violent movies, action flicks? The media's hyper-sensationalization of
"if it bleeds, it reads" news stories?

I think desensitization is inevitable in this age of information and technology. There are pros and cons to this of course. I just hate the fact that it's making me feel like a robot more and more each day.

Get up. Go to computer. Check email. Facebook. World headlines. Eat. Use washroom. Return to computer. Click. Click. Blog. Send. SAVE...

I think to a certain degree, our entire population has become super desensitized. Particularly when natural disasters or big events occur, we are subjected to the "CNN effect", in that yes, a disaster is happening and we are viewing it with our own eyes, but since it's not tangible to us, it's not really relevant.

And just remember, don't let Asian media jade you too much. It's a crazy industry, but hey, RTA should've trained you well enough. ;)

Hi Jenn, just go confidently in the direction of your plan and live the life you've imaged. Remember, u r in this world to live, not to exist. You have your own life, although you always think the life lived for others is a life worthwile. Take care~

Hi,Jennifer.I think many difficulties encountered in our life are unexpectable.I know you are very sympathetic to those people who are stricken with disasters wherever they are.Having seen so many tragedies,we fear to accept the fact, because it diverges on the meaning of life we suppose to be.so we are namb. But life goes on.We should keep up our spirits to rebuild our home, and learn from this sad experience and be more alert, prepare to protect ourselves,families,friends...P.S. my ipod U2 has been stolen today,I have been so "dao mei"lately. i am the girl who was eliminated in the english speaking contest.Thank you for your encouragement,i appreciate very much! HAPPY EVERYDAY!

Glad I haven't had the problem that you have. I just wish I can do something for these people. I am living in your country, but worry about my people. I never had this kind feeling ever. I am not numb, I don't know what to do. I woke up the morning, and really wanted to just get on the fly and go to place where need help the most. I really wish I can do something for them, anything.
have a good trip by the way!
