CNN) -- U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says President Bush should consider boycotting the opening ceremony of the Olympics Games in Beijing this summer to protest China's human rights record.

President Bush and U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have both criticized China's record on human rights.

"If freedom-loving people throughout the world do not speak out against China's oppression in China and Tibet, we have lost all moral authority to speak on behalf of human rights anywhere in the world," Pelosi told reporters during a visit to the Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, in Dharamsala, India, on February 21. "We must follow the purpose of the Olympics and not politicize the games."

OK. HUMAN RIGHTS.

I am all for human rights. But does anyone else smell a bit of historical hypocrisy here?

Why don't we take a trip a down memory lane and look at the human rights track record from other countries that have hosted the Olympics, shall we?

I love the United States. I would love to live in L.A. or Hawaii one day. New York? One of my all-time favourite cities. But here is where I need to say, "Hello! There is a pink elephant in the room, let's not pretend it's not there!"

The US is concerned with China's human rights track record. This, coming from a nation that not more than a century ago embraced slavery. African slaves that were beaten to death, whipped, caned, raped, and even after the civil rights movement, discriminated against...and even till this day, still are in several southern states.

The following olympic games were held in Japan in the past:

Tokyo, Summer Games 1964
Sapporo, Winter Games 1972
Nagano, Winter Games 1998

Germany:

1936, Berlin Games Opened by the Nazi King himself, Adolf Hitler...
At this time, from 1918 up until the end of World War II, Hitler is in power. Not saying that other nations couls have forseen the hell on earth he would unleash on 6 million Jews, but what about Munich, 1972?

About 30 years down the line and no one is calling on Germany's human rights track record?

RAPE OF NANKING: 1937...let's not forget this holocaust. So Japan can host the Olympics after brutally killing, raping and pillaging God knows how many innocent Chinese civilians? Kids, grandmas, women, men brutally raped, disfigured, disembowled. Some 30 years down the line, their slate is clean to host a humanistic peaceful Olympics? Let us not forget that every country has it's past. It's easy to point fingers now when the dust has settled on your kingdom, but what if you had to run a country bombarded with a tornadoe of changes and with one fifth of the world's population thrown into the mix?

I am not guru on what is happening in Tibet. There's as much fighing between what's being reported in the media these days as there is in that region. All I know is that I hate war, and I hate that innocent civilians are the ones who die. I am simply drawing some attention to historical events that we cannot forget. Just because they are in history books now, doesn't mean we can wipe our hands clean. There is much to be learned from the past. There is obviously a degree of relativity here: A genocide is more disconcerting than a war between two or three nations that enter combat each side prepared. When a country cruelly punishes it's own citizens for reasons of racial cleansing (like Rwanda, 1994) or because of religion, it is absolutely sick and in breach of human rights.

Yes, China is not an "angel" nation. But can you name one country that isn't guilty of being Lady MacBeth at one point in time? In short, the Olympics should not be used as a stage for politics. If it is, then I don't see how many countries that have hosted the games in the past can be qualified to do so if they are to keep in line with the Olympic concept of a humanistic Olympics.

Hi, Jennifer. I'm a Chinese student, now studying in Germany. To be frank, I've never watched any programs hosted by you. But I guess, you must be one of most excellent CCTV-anchors. I'm pretty delighted and proud of you that you would come to Beijing and work for CCTV. I've visited your Blog for several times. and today I'd like to say that I, too, hate the politicization of the Games. And I'm very much convinced that Beijing Olympics will be a great and successful one! And I hope to see your brilliant reports during the Games. Best wishes!

Blind patriotism, loyalty, and obedience to one nation or government are not legitimate moral values. Democracy has its moral basis in truth, tolerance, freedom, and respect for human dignity. If we are loyal to these universal values, we should all start to critically examine our government. As far as Jennifer's article is concerned, I agree with Mr. President that the Olympics are about athletic competition, not politics. Again, i am glad that we're all allowed to express our personal opinions here

To Grace Marter: You are proud of being an American, that you "can say whatever you want to", but does your words means anything to your government? Your country has been benifiting yourself by damaging other countries. Maybe you have not felt about this yet. Maybe one day you will feel shameful of being an American, no matter how super-power your country is.

Tired to hear or see these inresposenable commons anymore. sometimes they just want you to react and make mistakes. So let's take a deep breath, calm down a bit, and tell ourselves that let's do something for the Olympics, let's make it better. We have 1.3 billion fans back us up, and million of people who loves Olympics around the world. So we are confident, and the best way to fight back is to show them one of the best Olympic games in the history. And we know we can do it. So take it easy girl! We will just be Fine!

Since when is the Speaker of the House running the President's agenda? The Olympics are about athletic competition, not politics... but again, as Americans we can say whatever we want to, most of the time
