Politics and Sports: Spielberg's Mini-Boycott

As you probably all know, last Tuesday, the man who brought us E.T. and Schindler's List decided to step down from his role as Artistic Advisor to the Beijing Olympics. The reason? He does not agree with China's "light" stance on the Darfur crisis.

I just find it a bit ironic that when it was the Soviet Union that tried to boycott the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, It was China that basically saved the games. China's decision not to jump on the bandwagon resulted in 6 other countries also following suit. Now the man from LA is saying, "Look, you're doing enough for Darfur, so I'm gonna take away my creativity! Humph!"...

A bit childish, no? Yes, politics and sports shouldn't mix, but reality obviously says otherwise. It's time to acknowledge the Pink Elephant in the room -- sports and politics are as much tied as religion is to war, hunger is to famine. Unfortunate, but true...The world is not black and white. We divide up land and call them countries, we organize and delegate, but the borders eventually and inevitably become murky... like when a wet brush touches down on the canvas of a watercolour painting....Suddenly those fine lines are not looking so definitive anymore. C'est la vie!

In the perfect world, everything would be compartmentalized into neat boxes and categories. Sports would strictly belong in the realm of friendly competition between athletes, and the officials involved would be the coaches, referees, managers, etc - not world leaders or movie directors trying to manipulate it so as to influence affirmative action plans or change the course of a nations decision.

To each his own. I am not gonna bash on Mr. Hollywood for bailing out(even though I do think it's a little unprofessional, and goes goes "against the spirit of the Games"). Beijing will still host a mesmerizing Olympics that will probably go down in history as the best one yet. The country has been waiting for this moment for way too long and has invested way too much to let this affect the final outcome.

We all know the Olympic games is a grand party , it is not only belong to the host country ,but for all the people from different countries with differnt colors and skins to get together .
It is unwisely to politicilize the Olympic .However, we are just human beings, and we have no rights to criticize those unfriendly behaviors.
The Chinese government have always and will always insist on its diplomatic principles. Although , it is pity for us common people to wintess the great world-master , we also have few famous elites who devoted to contributing their plans to make the 2008 Olympic the greatest one !
We are looking forward to that day !

Dear Jennifer, The program you host is so wonderful because of you, a beautiful lady. I back up your positions on the Beijing Olympic Games. Some people in the entertainment circle or politicians declare that the Beijing had played a unsuitable role in Sudan political crisis. They will call on the people or athlete to boycott the games. All of them are cynical and ridiculous. They violate the Olympic spirit, peace, union and struggle. This is the war between westen countries and China, Capitalism and proletarian. Why do they directly appeal to the war to China, instead, adopt such nasty way to insult China. They are so disgusting.
Like you Jannifer, support you all the time.

We can't help it, Jen. In sports, as in music, what Americans really cherish is an idol or a symbol. Fans want to be entertained, riveted, allured & moved. Preferably, all in one amazing sequence. In the wider sense, the question of whether sports unite or divide people of opposing passions and ideologies is debatable: sports crosses all boundaries; but do politicians respect the rules?
