Josef Fritzl... what can we learn?

What's happening in our world today?

I mean it. Seriously. If you read the papers with any regularity you wont need me to tell you that first we had Fritzl. Then we had this week we had the Italian Fritzl. And now, it seems, a Colombian Fritzl, too.

As you know, in April last year a young woman was admitted into hospital in Austria after being kept in captivity her whole life. She was 19 years old. And her prison for those 19 years was a basement dungeon of the house of a man named Josef Fritzl who was not only her biological father, but her grandfather, too.

You know how the story continues. But where does it end?

Earlier this month, Fritzl was told by a court that he would spend the rest of his life in prison. He said he wouldn't appeal the sentence. But, there's more. Two similar cases have emerged in the past couple of days in both Italy and Colombia where police believe that serial abuse within the same family.

It poses serious questions about the world we live in.

What possesses someone to physically and emotionally torment someone who shares not only the same surname, but also the same blood? What fills them with such confidence that they believe that they won't get caught? Or, worse still, are they even aware that they are answerable to society and its rule of law?

Of course, each of these three cases are far more complex than the paragraphs above would allow. But, surely, the problem (if not the solution) is simple. It's worth taking some time out to think over. And, if you wish, let me know what comes to your mind in the space below.

Except Josef Fritzl, I do worry about the girl raised in isolation for 19 years. There are a bunch of theories and evidence indicating that children isolated from the society do not have sense of self (which defines who we are and is the base for human cognition) and lose the ability to socialize. it really worths further attention of what the girl is up to.

I think the feelings of affection are the most precious human beings, but unfortunately not everyone can have, so now we must cherissh what we have, at the same time I think people should know how to protect themselves though sometimes it can not afford to do, this is a heavy topic , at last i hope the daughter can be treated and forget the past (this is not easy)and be happy for her rest of life.
